Explore Lagos Old Town in the “Month that May not be Named”
Lagos – the land of sea, surf, and sandy beaches, come summer – is actually surprisingly rich in its history and culture, both of which are often overlooked when peak season hits. But that means that spring visitors to the Algarve can walk the very pleasant line between soaking up some sun, before it really starts beating down, and finding out more about what makes this Southern Portuguese town unique. So, let’s get stuck into what May means to the people of Lagos, and spots you won’t want to miss in Lagos Old Town before the summer sun hits.
The Legend of the Month that Shall not be Named
Before we dive into unmissable spots in Lagos, we want to tell you more about what the month of May means to the people of the city, because while it doesn’t tell of moorish princesses, this tale is certainly unique. In fact, while parties break out across the rest of the Algarve as the region comes awake with the first signs of summer, Lagos doesn’t join in the celebrations…
A local Lagos legend tells there was once a knight who robbed the town’s ladies in the month that follows April – an event so traumatic that the entire month has been tainted by its memory, with locals going on to refer to it as “the month that has passed” or “the month that is yet to come,” – no one dares utter its name aloud.
This story dates back to the mid-16th century, when the people of the city had an odd tradition: they would dress a foreigner in the finest clothes they could find, cover them in gold, adorn them in jewels, chains, bracelets, rings, and any other valuable ornaments they could sew onto the garments. The foreigner would then be mounted on the best horse in town and would ride through Lagos old town, following flute-playing men and dancing women, accompanied by a parade of locals wearing festive caps and shields and carrying lances, all shouting: “Long live our May!”
Year after year, the locals would celebrate the coming of May by honouring a foreigner, until one year, dressed in all the town’s finery and on the finest mount, the foreigner spurred the beast on and galloped straight out of the town’s gates, taking all the finery with them, never to be seen again.
So, if you see any mention of the “month that may not be named”, you know why!
Now, onto the unmissable spots in Lagos old town you’ll want to soak up.
