Banho 29: A Unique Algarve Tradition

Picture this: hordes of people lined up on the beach in the moonlight, all waiting for midnight to strike to go wading into the water to wash their demons away. Sounds like something out of a folk tale, right?

Sure, but it’s a cherished Lagos tradition, and one you certainly won’t want to miss if you’re in town! Held every summer on the night of 29th August, the beaches of Lagos come alive with a tradition unlike any other: Banho 29. In fact, what began as a local ritual has grown into one of the Algarve’s most cherished community celebrations, blending folklore, faith, and fun in equal measure (now over 2 locations and 3 days!), so read on to find out more about it and how to make your August stay at LUX MARE even more unforgettable!

After all, even if you don’t believe the folklore, it can’t hurt to give tradition the benefit of the doubt just this once, right?

A Splash of Lagos History

A tradition that may actually date back as far as Moorish rule of the Algarve, which ended in 1249, for centuries, locals have believed that bathing in the sea at midnight on this date was “worth 29 baths”, and would “wash off their demons”, thus bringing health and protection for the year ahead. Rooted in superstition but also in seasonal rhythm – marking the symbolic end of summer – the ritual was first practised quietly by fishing communities, before growing to draw in crowds from far and wide.

The reason for a midnight dip? It is said that the devil runs loose during the day of the 29th August, which makes nighttime the only safe time to go in the sea.

Over time, locals started making the dip into more of a celebration, with roasting chorizo over beach bonfires, songs and storytelling. In recent years, it has grown into a lively 3-day event in 2 locations: Cais da Solaria in Lagos and Praia da Luz, weaving music, food, festivity, a surprisingly creative bathing suit competition, and a fireworks display into the night.

Today, Banho 29 is a not-to-be-missed date on the calendar of everyone in the region – a chance to celebrate the end of summer, wash off the old, welcome in the new, and dance the night(s) away. So, what can you expect?

What to Expect at Banho 29 in 2025

In 2025, Banho 29 promises to be as vibrant as ever, drawing locals and visitors alike to the shores of Lagos and Praia da Luz. Here’s what you can look forward to:

The Midnight Dip – At the stroke of midnight, crowds rush into the sea together, honouring the original tradition. Whether you wade in or dive headfirst, the shared laughter and energy make this a magical moment. You might also spot groups dressed in white going for day dips throughout the celebrations, so don’t limit yourself to just one dive!

Music and Dancing – From folk tunes to modern beats, big names in Portuguese music, and DJ sets, live music fills the night air – with a different line-up in each location – setting the stage for dancing under the stars.

Traditional Swimwear Contest – One of the highlights of Banho 29 is the annual swimwear competition. The swimsuits are modelled at an event open to the public, with cash prizes awarded in each category. Celebrating both the past and present, contestants showcase traditional bathing costumes once worn in Lagos, contrasting with creativity and innovation in modern interpretations and playful designs.

Historical reenactments – Banho 29 isn’t just about the midnight dip; it’s also a chance to step back in time. Reenactments throughout the evening bring old traditions to life, reminding everyone of how this festival began and how much it has evolved.

Food Stalls and Treats – No Portuguese celebration is complete without local flavours. Fresh grilled sardines, sweets, and plenty of drinks ensure that no one goes hungry.

Family Fun – Banho 29 is truly for everyone. Families, groups of friends, and even solo travellers find joy in joining the festivities, making it one of the Algarve’s most inclusive events.

Tips for Experiencing Banho 29 Like a Local

Arrive Early – Beaches can get busy, so come in the afternoon to soak up the atmosphere.

Bring a Towel and Warm Clothes – While daytime is scorching, when the nighttime chill sets in, the sea may be refreshing (read: cold!), so you’ll thank yourself afterwards.

Dive into Tradition – While it’s a party, remember it has deep cultural roots, so look out for the reenactments, and be sure not to miss the bathing suit competition! And the midnight dip is, of course, a must.
