Watersports in the Algarve: Top 5 in Lagos

amazonia-boat-charter-lagos-algarve

Anyone looking to book a stay at LUX MARE will have had a scout around at what Lagos has to offer – from long stretches of golden sand to a town centre steeped in history and culture. However, sports lovers and thrillseekers may be interested in other activities… ones that get their hearts pounding, adrenaline pumping, and will have them out in the sunshine enjoying the best of the Atlantic’s cool waters.

Want to find out about the best watersports in the Algarve? Then read on for the top 5 in Lagos to make your visit unforgettable.

5. Coasteering and Snorkelling

Dipping our toes into the world of watersports with an option that’s partly on land, have you heard of coasteering? Having gained popularity since the 2000s, this exhilarating adventure sport involves navigating rocky coastlines by swimming, climbing, jumping, and scrambling. And what better place to try it than by exploring Lagos’ abundance of sea caves, cliffs, and hidden coves? Many coasteering tours also provide snorkelling equipment, allowing you to come into close contact with some of the Algarve’s wildlife in its own watery habitat.

4. Out on the water: Sailing

Now, wading into water sporting culture: sailing.

With a coastline largely protected from the Atlantic waves, providing flat water with strong winds, Lagos makes for truly excellent sailing. So much so, that the GC32 Racing Tour has been held from Lagos Marina since 2018. Local support of the sport, a community of sailing enthusiasts, and the Algarve’s excellent year-round weather have all led to sailing gaining prominence ever since, with options aplenty to get out into the open seas for amateurs and professionals alike.

3. Dive to the depths

Next on our list of water sports in the Algarve is diving. The perfect opportunity to discover a vibrant underwater world teeming with fish, octopuses, squid, and the region’s other marine creatures. An ideal activity for nature lovers and families with children over 12 looking to connect with the Algarve’s raw natural beauty.

2. Kayaking, Canoeing, and SUP: Paddle Through Paradise

When it comes to exploring the coast, jumping in a kayak, canoe, or onto a SUP board allows you to paddle at your own pace as you access secluded coves, sea caves, and grottoes often inaccessible by larger boats. With tours led by knowledgeable tour guides available, you’ll be led straight to the most beautiful spots on a safe, enjoyable adventure on the water.

1. Ride the Waves: Surfing

Lagos is, put simply, a paradise for surfers. Providing waves that are neither too big nor too small, consistent swells and favourable wind conditions make it an ideal destination, whether for beginners or pro surfers. Want to give surfing a go? Head to Meia Praia beach – one of the longest beaches in the Algarve and a popular spot for those starting out and more experienced wave enthusiasts alike. You’ll also find several surf schools and rental shops providing all the equipment you’ll need.

But are windsurfing, and kitesurfing also an option? They certainly are, though not in Lagos itself. If you fancy either of these options, head over to the Alvor Lagoon for the shallow waters and steady winds required.

Bonus: Boat tours

Though not a watersport per se, no list of water activities in Lagos would be complete without a nod to the boat tours available. The perfect opportunity to enjoy a unique perspective of soaring cliffs and hidden sea caves and even explore a secluded beach or two.

Many boat tours in Lagos include visits to the famous Ponta da Piedade, known for its stunning rock formations and crystal-clear waters, but you can also choose to head west to Sagres and Portugal’s most southwesterly point or east to Benagil for a look inside Portugal’s most famous sea cave. Whether on a half-day, full-day or sunset tour, you want a private chef on board to cook up an exquisite feast, or to get your friends together for a boat trip to remember, we suggest Amazonia Boat Charter, who provide the luxurious adventure of a lifetime.

It’s safe to say that Lagos is a dream destination for water sports enthusiasts. From high-speed excitement to serene beauty, both adrenaline junkies and nature lovers are sure to find an activity to make their stay unforgettable. So, take your pick of the activities that pique your interest, and let our concierge know so they can make all the arrangements, leaving you to enjoy a holiday out on the water tailored to your every desire.
